Online reactions to Australian wildfires
Entire forests reduced to ashes and houses totally destroyed by flames … these spectacular images were posted online by residents of New South Wales in Australia and bear witness to the series of major wildfires that have ravaged the region over the past few days. The fires which have been caused by the unseasonably hot temperatures and strong winds and have prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency are at the centre of discussion among Australian web users.
The government in New South Wales has teamed up with Google to create this interactive map so citizens can stay informed on where and how the fires are spreading. It also shows in which areas fire fighters have the flames under control and where they continue to rage.
And as is often the case, there has been a great show of solidarity online. The local branch of the Red Cross has launched donation appeals via social networks, to provide those who have lost everything in the wildfires with basic necessities.
This environmental group is asking web users to also spare a thought for all the wild animals caught up in the fires, asking people to leave bowls of water out for wildlife to keep them hydrated whilst fire fighters continue to battle the flames.
