An Austrian poacher has shot and killed two policemen and an emergency worker and has taken another officer hostage near Annaberg in central Austria, according to local media reports.

With a news blackout in force, little information has been provided by officials about both the developing situation and the suspect, identified as a 55-year-old game poacher by local reports.

Interior Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck said he did not want to provide the gunman with information through news reports, which he is believed to be monitoring.

As of Tuesday morning, the suspect was being held at bay inside his farmhouse, by Austrian special forces. According to local reports cited by AFP, the suspect's children may be inside the farm with him.

Police began pursuit of the man late on Monday, near Annaberg, roughly 100 km (60 miles) west of Vienna. The man fled after police attempted stop his vehicle.

After his car landed in a ditch, he opened fire on police, shooting a police commando in the neck and a paramedic tending to him, killing them both.

At a roadblock the suspect reportedly then took an officer hostage after shooting dead a second police officer.

The suspect next made his way to his farmhouse near the city of Melk, some 70 km (40 miles) away, in a stolen police car.

"The suspect fled in his car to his house. That is where he is currently located. It is surrounded by police," said the Interior Ministry in a statement.
